Children’s dentistry: teeth varnishing, i.e. fluoride against caries.
caries in a child

There are many ways to prevent caries from an early age. It is important for us to be aware of this and be able to protect our own children from the unpleasant consequences of decayed teeth. Today, medicine offers much more opportunities for proper prevention than in the times of our youth, so it is worth knowing about them and using them. Our efforts in this direction will pay off in the future, and our offspring will enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile for many years.

Varnishing ≠ Varnishing

One of the methods we have to choose from is varnishing children’s teeth by a dentist. It’s important to pay attention to the name because next to it ການເຄືອບ sealing can also be performed on the child. These are two different dental procedures with a similar name and the same purpose: both are to prevent caries, which is why parents often confuse them or equate them, thinking that they are one and the same.

What is varnishing?

Teeth varnishing consists in covering the teeth with a special varnish containing fluoride. An extremely thin layer of the applied preparation dries on the teeth, protecting them from the harmful effects of bacteria in the oral cavity and strengthening the enamel. The procedure is performed both in children on primary and permanent teeth, as well as in adults. In the first case, teeth can be varnished no more often than every 3 months, while adults can do it every six months.

How is varnishing done?

Before the actual varnishing, the dentist should thoroughly clean the teeth and remove calculus to ensure optimal effectiveness. Then, using a special spatula or brush, the preparation z fluorite is applied to the surface of all teeth. For two hours after the procedure you mustn’t eat anythingand in the evening on the day of varnishing, instead of brushing your teeth, you only need to rinse them thoroughly. For children, a different fluoride varnish is used than for adults. It is 100% safe, so we do not have to worry that the child will accidentally swallow it. Even then, nothing bad will happen. The varnish for small patients, unlike the colorless varnish for adults, is yellow, which makes it easier to apply it in the right amount.

Why varnish, if fluoride is in every toothpaste or mouthwash?

Many opponents of teeth varnishing question them using this argument. However, the facts are that during home oral hygiene treatments, dose of fluoridethat the teeth receive is incomparably smaller. At home concentration fluorite is lower, its exposure time is shorter, and the teeth are not as thoroughly cleaned as in the dental office. There are also special self-contained fluids available on the market fluoridation. However, you need to approach them carefully, because too much fluoride can harm tooth enamel, dulling it, making it brittle and even leading to its disintegration.
